AUSTIN, TX— Texas shuts out the #5 TCU Horned Frogs and clinch their first conference series of the season
You’ve got to tip your hat to both starting pitchers in the game. TCU’s Brian Howard went eight innings (complete game) giving up two runs, both coming in the bottom of the sixth, giving up five hits while striking out nine batters and walking none.
Texas starter Ty Culbreth was pretty good too. He went 6.1 innings giving up four hits, striking out three and walking three. He was able to get out of key situations with great defense behind him. He stranded two on in the top of the sixth when he got a 4-6-3 double play after having the bases loaded with one out.
The inning when Texas was able to get something going offensively was in the sixth inning. The inning began with a Tyler Rand single to center field. He then stole second during Travis Jones’ at-bat where he eventually got a single to move Rand to third and give Texas runners on first and third with no outs.
The next batter would hit into a double play but TCU was content to give up the run to get two outs. Well the pitcher relaxed just a little too much and on the first pitch to Tres Barrera, Barrera hit a solo home run to left center to make it 2-0 Texas.
The bullpen for Texas then came in and did their job to close it down. Chase Shugart threw 2/3 of an inning to finish off the seventh getting two ground balls. Josh Sawyer would come in in the eighth and strikeout the side. Then newly anointed closer, Connor Mayes, came in for the ninth and promptly shut it down.
Mayes would get his second save of the season setting down the Horned Frogs in order. Texas would win 2-0 and clinch the series going into Game 3 on Saturday at 2:30 PM CT on FS1.
